Urology or genitourinary surgery refers to the surgical specialty that focuses on the male and female urinary tract, and the male reproductive system. Urologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with disorders of the following organ systems:

The urinary tract: kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder and urethra

The male reproductive system: testes, prostate, penis, vas deferens and seminal vesicles

Urologist manage a wide spectrum of disease conditions, some requiring medical therapy and others requiring surgical correction.

Many urological procedures can be done without hospital admission e.g. prostate biopsy, cystoscopy, circumcision and vasectomy. More complex operations will require hospital admission for a few days.
